Update from the ASM’s Legislative Task Force regarding the 2021-2022 Session

The Acupuncture Society of Massachusetts’ Legislative Task Force has an important update about two very critical pieces of legislation, one is an Insurance Bill and one is Legislation Related to Dry Needling. Here is some fantastic background information so you can become more familiar with each and instructions on how you can do your part to promote one or both of these bills.

Call to Action: We’re asking you to reach out to your state representative and state senator to ask them to co-sponsor these important bills. If you need the contact information for your legislator, it can be found here. Please take the time to reach out. A short email or phone call only takes a few minutes and has a significant impact. Every letter and phone call is counted. Please use the magic words: “I am your constituent.” Everything you need is below.

#1: Insurance Bill

What it is: An Act relative to the practice of acupuncture [HD2373 & SD1610] is legislation introduced in this session by two of our legislative champions, Representative Smitty Pignatelli and Senator Eric Lesser, to expand insurance coverage for acupuncture treatment for pain, substance use treatment, PTSD, and nausea.

What it does: The bill would require private health plans to cover this evidence-based, proven effective treatments.

Why ASM co-authored and support this bill: This year marks the beginning of a new legislative session on Beacon Hill in Boston. As you know, the last year has been one of incredible upheaval in health care. Providing access to safe and quality treatment is more essential than ever. Part of our efforts to ensure that acupuncture patients can get the best possible care include getting decision makers in the state legislature to advance policies to extend access to those who need it.

How you can participate: Please reach out to your state representative and state senator to ask them to co-sponsor and support HD2373 & SD1610. If you need the contact information for your legislator, it can be found here. A short email or phone call asking them to co-sponsor only takes a few minutes and has a significant impact. What it does: These bills ensure that those providing pain treatment with acupuncture needles are properly licensed and trained and will require licensed health care providers to have adequate training and independent testing to validate their skills.
